Second Life Summary

In class we talked about all the different aspects of the online community, Second Life. We talked about whether or not the way people act on Second Life should be any different than the way we act on the website. For example, Germanas started to follow a girl when we were on the site on class, which is hopefully not something anybody would do in real life. We talked about why we thought it was okay, and funny, to follow this girl on the website, when it is not okay to so in reality. We also discussed how second life will change the way that we communicate. There is also a danger to become too involved in the site. For instance, people begin to not be able to tell the difference between their second life and their real one. But as long as people don't become too involved, I think that Second Life can be used as a great networking tool because you can go and talk to people all over the world.

Yeah, it is true. If we see Second Life as a game or a platform for communicating with others in the world, Second Life is a very interesting network tool. I think people should recognize the difference between the Second life and the real life. Everything is faked in Second Life. On the other hand, it is a good experience to try some different from our real living. And we can feel free by creating a faked identity to do some silly thing. This is the funniest thing in Second life.

The creators of SL don't want to call it a game. They want it to be the next generation of cyber communities. In my option it is still a game. Yeah it might not have a story line or a goal to achieve. You have the freedom to create what ever your imagination can come up with. Ultimately it is still for entertainment values. What Germanas did is a perfect example of why it is still a game. There is no real life punishments for anything negative that is done in SL. Sure your account can be deleted and you can be banned. But there are ways around that. I think it has the potential of becoming what its creators dream it would be, but I don't see that happening for at least another few decades.
